Black-Faced Ibis

This bird is the latest addition to my bird fixation. The fact that they cohabitate with people in such harmony, despite their size and their clumsy look immediately fascinated me.

I saw them for the first time resting on a tree in the main square of ‘Puerto Octay’, in the Lake Region of the south of Chile. There were so many of them, making their noise as they saw the day go by, looking heavy and solid, my first thought was ‘How the heck did they get up there’. My question was answered as I saw them fly, gracefully through the sky of Frutillar and Llanquihue.

After that I was luck enough to see them everywhere I went, walking on the pavements, sneaking in people’s gardens, resting on a tree or a roof. They seem to be just another part of the landscape for the locals, but I’m aways fascinated to see them up close and know that they are part of our daily life back there in the south of Chile.
